Elias Haslanger - Live at the Gallery

Art Director: Mike Harnisch | Photographer: Dwayne Hills

My second collaboration with Elias allowed for a bit more exploration beyond the Blue Note aesthetic. I played more aggressively with the composition, pushing for type flow that nicely complimented the energy of the photography.

I wanted Elias' live album to have more of an "Impulse Records" flavor than his previous release. The solid red foreshadows the warmth of the setlist. I was particularly happy with how nicely the Cherrywood Records logo worked with the entire package.

It was hard to choose from the amazing set of photographs provided for this release, so I made sure to utilize other elements of the package design to highlight some of my other favorites.

Although this poster was shelved in favor of a version that celebrates the entire band, I prefer the illustrative style of this version, inspired by 1950's Verve presses. I wanted to convey the amazing spirit of Elias' solos with fluid and simple marks. The black and white concepts imagine Elias' 2014 poster looking pretty dope back in 1981.
